Books VS E-Books

|
If anyone ever ask me this question, "Between books (printed) and e-books (digital), which one do you prefer?and why?" , my answer would be....

BOOKS
I love the smell of the books. When I open my books, my nose caught the smell of the papers. Yeah, It make me feels more attach to the books that I'm going to read. Can I say that the smell functions just like just like human's pheromones?! It makes the books more attractive compared to the e-books which don't have paper based pages, let alone to gives the "sensational smell" *giggles*

I love the sounds of the flipping pages. Especially during the climax of the story when I flip the pages faster and faster, with the same pace as the scene.

They look great on the shelf. Don't you think so?
My eyes don't get tired spending a longer time reading a book.
Books don't need power supply. You can sit hours, or days, or even weeks in the middle of the jungle or in an isolated island reading your books without worrying about the run out battery. Because books don't need all that. They just need you to read 'em. Right?

Do you own Kindle or any e-readers? Well, I don't. But, that's not the point. The point is have you ever think what will happen if your expensive hi-tech Kindle (how much it costs?) drops on the floor? Oh my, I just can't imagine your feeling at that time. It would be horrible. Yes..yes.., I know you'll say "I'll take a great care of my e-Readers. I'll never let it happen." But, such a thing do happen you know. Well, I drop my books hundreds of times, but they don't easily break (or they don't break at all). When they drop on the floor I just pick them up, and said "Owh, I'm sorry my dear book, are you hurt?" and I can hear the reply "Oh, no. I'm good!!"

Well, guys this is just my opinion. I do read E-books on laptop myself. But, I think that E -books just can't kill the books, because we've bee n living with books for roughly more than 500 years. I love the idea of e-readers, and if I ever have the opportunity (or money) to try to use 'em, I'll try of course. Yesterday I read an article about the iPad is replacing e-readers. Wow, just how fast the technology is progressing?

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

|
The Story [Shelfari.com]
As a young man, Jacob Jankowski was tossed by fate onto a rickety train that was home to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. It was the early part of the great Depression, and for Jacob, now ninety, the circus world he remembers was both his salvation and a living hell. A veterinary student just shy of a degree, he was put in charge of caring for the circus menagerie. It was there that he met Marlena, the beautiful equestrian star married to August, the charismatic but twisted animal trainer. And he met Rosie, an untrainable elephant who was the great gray hope for this third-rate traveling show. The bond that grew among this unlikely trio was one of love and trust, and, ultimately, it was their only hope for survival.

My Thought
I'm so hooked up with this book. The story is fascinating and well crafted and I end it up with a long sigh of satisfaction. The story is from Jacob's point of view which is told alternately between his current 93 years old self and his former younger self. Sara Gruen did a great Job with the very first chapter with a gripping scene that makes me wowing and keep on flipping the pages to find out more.I love the idea of circus's life and to get to know the real life of the performers and the circus animals really is fantastic. I always think that, those who make jokes and all those circus thingy are entertaining. And yes it is. But, in this book Gruen unravels all the questions that pop out of my mind. How their real life are? How they train the circus  animals? Are they get paid off well? and etc..So, I'm so much involved in the story of this circus worker, feeling that I was there myself and I'm sure that I will never look at the circus the same again. This book can be funny, sad, romantic, disgusting, fantastic, and breathtaking all at the same time. But the final result is satisfying because it ties so well into the overall story. All in all, this is such a great reading and I recommend it to all of you, readers out there to get a hold of this book. I just can't wait to see how the movie version, starring Rob Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon will turn out. Hopefully, it will be as great as the novel. OK guys, I'll be leaving you with one of my favorite scene from Water for Elephants. It makes me laugh until my eyes all teary. Enjoy!!

Before I can tip the meat out, his huge jaws chomp down on my arm. I scream. The bucket crashes to the floor, splattering chopped entrails everywhere. The cat drops off my arm and pounces on the meat. I slam the door and hold it shut with my knee while I check whether I still have an arm. I do. It is slick with saliva and as red as if I had dunked it in boiling water, but the skin isn't broken. A moment later, I realize August is laughing uproariously behind me.
I turn to him. "What the hell is wrong with you? You think that's funny?"
"I do, yes," says August, making no effort to contain his mirth."You're seriously fucked, you know that?"
I jump down from the flat car, check my intact arm once more, and stalk off.
"Jacob, wait," laughs August, coming up behind me. "Don't be sore. I was just having a
little fun with you."
"What fun? I could have lost my arm!"
"He hasn't got any teeth."

Sometimes, animals can give a great impact to human's life. Dewey is one of the examples. As an animals lover, I'm really psych to read about this book. My opinion: animals can be "humaner"  than human and we can learn lot of good things from them. But most of the time, human tend to be wilder than animal which confused us between what and who.

Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World

Synopsis [Goodreads.com]
DEWEY is the heartwarming story of Dewey Readmore Books, the beloved library cat of Spencer, Iowa, as told by his owner and companion of nineteen years, Vicki Myron, the librarian who found him on a frigid January morning when he was abandoned as a kitten in the book drop slot. It is also the story of a remarkable small town, which burned down at the beginning of the Depression, only to rebuild itself, and which was almost shuttered during the farm crisis of the 1980s, before regrouping and rededicating itself to small town American values. Dewey's local charm and worldwide fame became a symbol of hope for this recovering town. Through Dewey's antics, we come to know and love many of the colorful and inspiring people of Spencer. But perhaps the most inspiring person in Spencer is Vicki Myron herself, a single mother who survived the bankruptcy of her family farm and working in a box factory to put two of her brothers through college to become one of the leaders of the Iowa library system. Dewey is one lovable, roguish cat who managed to transform an entire town and inspire people across the globe.

This is my second time winning the Blog Bonanza Contest hosted by an awesome local bookstore, Bookxcess Bookstore. I'm so glad that for twice in a row I won the contest, thank you Bookxcess. Today I went there to claim my prize and this is the book that I chose out of the two choices. I've heard a lot of good opinions from the readers out there, talking about Neil Gaiman's works: novels, short stories, poem, script, and comics. And I'm so happy to have this Biography of Neil Gaiman for free.I'm well aware that, biographies are my least interest of reading and to tell the truth I never even read any from this genre. But for now, I have one to consider right? So, I'll be reading a biography and this will be a great challenge for me, who never read biographies. Now and again, thank you so much Bookxcess for such a great gift. I love you.

........

Synopsis's From Cover

Over the past twenty years, Neil Gaiman has developed into the premier fantasist of his generation, achieving that rarest of combination—unrivaled critical respect and extraordinary commercial success.  From the landmark comic book series The Sandman to novels such as the New York Times bestselling American Gods and Anansi Boys, from children’s literature like Coraline to screenplays for such films as Beowulf, Gaiman work has garnered him an enthusiastic and fiercely loyal, global following.  To comic book fans, he is Zeus in the pantheon of creative gods, having changed that industry forever.  For discerning readers, he bridges the vast gap that traditionally divides lovers of “literary” and “genre” fiction.  Gaiman is truly a pop culture phenomenon, an artist with a magic touch whose work has won almost universal acclaim.

Now, for the first time ever, Prince of Stories chronicles the history and impact of the complete works of Neil Gaiman in film, fiction, music, comic books, and beyond. Containing hours of exclusive interviews with Gaiman and conversations with his collaborators, as well as wonderful nuggets of his work such as the beginning of an unpublished novel, a rare comic and never-before-seen essay, this is a treasure trove of all things Gaiman. In addition to providing in depth information and commentary on Gaiman’s myriad works, the book also includes rare photographs, book covers, artwork, and related trivia and minutiae, making it both an insightful introduction to his work, and a true “must-have” for his ever growing legion of fans.

Well, I hope this will be a great reading, as great as it's illustrative cover. Thanks again for Bookxcess Bookstore for the contest. I'll be joining in the next contest for sure. Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger

|
The Story  [from cover]
Julia and Valentina Poole are normal American teenagers - normal, at least, for identical "mirror" twins who have no interest in college or jobs or possibly anything outside their cosy urban home. But everything changes when they receive notice that an aunt whom they didn't know existed has died and left them a flat in an apartment block overlooking Highgate Cemetery in London. The feel that at least their own lives can begin....but have no idea that they've been summoned into a tangle of fraying lives, from the obsessive-compulsive crossword setter who lives above them to their aunt's mysterious and elusive lover who lives below them, and even to their aunt herself, who never got over her estrangement from the twin's mother - and who can't even seem to quite leave her flat....

My Thought
This book is spooky in its very own original way. That's what I can say about Her Fearful Symmetry. However, my feelings towards this book are all mixed up. A part of me really loves the book especially the characters and another part of me feels a little bit uncomfortable with the story, like.."woa.woa..Niffenegger, where are you bringing me to?" The great thing bout this book is it's characters. I don't say that I love all the characters in this book, buy I'm really impressed that they manage to annoy me so much. Julia with his bossy tone, and Valentina who can't even decide anything by her own, and Martin with his obsessive-compulsive craziness, Marijke, owh, what the hell she's thinking leaving Martin by his own after spending decades with him? and Espelth, erghh!! you looks stupid as a female ghost who's stuck in her own apartment and Robert? sort out your feelings man. Damn! They are all so weird, weird and weird! Great! (This is why I love the book. Haha!) Another great thing is the way Niffenegger describe the Highgate Cemetery. Normally, graveyard is not my favorite place, you know with all the gloomy and dark sensation, but in this book the way she explains the cemetery makes me feel like going there myself. It's so beautiful and historical. At least that's what I think. This is such a page turner because the mystery behind all the confusions and messed up identities make you think what will happen next? what's the secret? who's who? However, I think the ending is not fair to Valentina. To much subplots also make the books a little bit messy and not as neat as the The Time Traveler's Wife. But all in all, Audrey Niffenegger, you really did a great job to confuse me and to annoy me with all the weird, weird characters. Congratulations! This is the weirdest book I ever read and it's totally different from The Time Traveler's Wife. I love it!.

Favorite Quote
"There are several ways to react to being lost. One is to panic: this was usually Valentina's first impulse. Another is to abandon yourself to lostness, to allow the fact that you've misplaced yourself to change the way you experience the world.”

The Movie: Diary of a Wimpy Kid

|
Title/Year: Diary of Wimpy Kid (2010)
Director: Thor Freudenthal
Writers: Jackie & Jeff Filgo (Screenplay), Jeff Kinney (Book)
Genre: Comedy, Family
Cast: Zachary Gordon (Greg Heffley), Robert Capron (Rowley Jefferson)
CoffeeNCrackers' Meter: 5 cups of Coffee

.: Plot Summary :.
To Greg Heffley, middle school is the dumbest idea ever invented. It's a place rigged with hundreds of social landmines, not the least of which are morons, wedgies, swirlies, bullies, lunchtime banishment to the cafeteria floor - and a festering piece of cheese with nuclear cooties. To survive the never-ending ordeal and attain the recognition and status he feels he so richly deserves, Greg devises an endless series of can't-miss schemes, all of which, of course, go awry. And he's getting it all down on paper, via a diary - "it's NOT a diary, it's a journal!" Greg insists, preferring the less-sissyfied designation - filled with his opinions, thoughts, tales of family trials and tribulations, and (would-be) schoolyard triumphs. "One day when I'm famous," writes Greg, "I'll have better things to do than answer peoples' stupid questions all day." So was born the Wimpy Kid's diary

.: My Comment :.
Be yourself is the most important thing. Don't try to be someone else just because you want to try to impressed other people. That's what I learn from this movie. Greg cares so much about his image and try to act cool in front of others. He even tries to change his best friend Rowley's image and personality just so he won't get in his way to be a popular student at school. But, this just makes his friends hate him even more. Rowley in the other hand is an honest and genuine person and feel comfortable with his image and personality. He cares so much about Greg, but Greg's selfishness and insensitive feelings upset Rowley so much. So, conflict arises between them. In friendship, I really think that, we have to care about our friends' feelings. We can't put their feelings aside just to satisfy our own feeling. Friendship is all about accepting and to be accepted as your real self and friendship will be lasting forever if we follow this rule. All in all, Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a hilarious, fun, and enjoyable movie to watch. This movie also makes me think of school. It was such a great memory and so much fun!!

Favorite Quote: I'll be famous one day, but for know I'm stuck in middle school with a bunch of morons- Greg Heffley

Cover Crush: The Monsters of Templeton

|
The Monsters of Templeton, a novel by Lauren Groff. Another story of love, loss and identity.

"The day I returned to Templeton steeped in disgrace, the fifty-foot corpse of a monster surfaced in Lake Glimmerglass." So begins The Monsters of Templeton , a novel spanning two centuries: part a contemporary story of a girl's search for her father, part historical novel, and part ghost story, this spellbinding novel is at its core a tale of how one town holds the secrets of a family. In the wake of a wildly disastrous affair with her married archaeology professor, Willie Upton arrives on the doorstep of her ancestral home in Templeton, New York, where her hippie-turned-born-again-Baptist mom, Vi, still lives. Willie expects to be able to hide in the place that has been home to her family for generations, but the monster's death changes the fabric of the quiet, picture-perfect town her ancestors founded. Even further, Willie learns that the story her mother had always told her about her father has all been a lie: he wasn't the random man from a free-love commune that Vi had led her to imagine, but someone else entirely. Someone from this very town. As Willie puts her archaeological skills to work digging for the truth about her lineage, she discovers that the secrets of her family run deep. Through letters, editorials, and journal entries, the dead rise up to tell their sides of the story as dark mysteries come to light, past and present blur, old stories are finally put to rest, and the shocking truth about more than one monster is revealed. - Shelfari

How to Write a Great Book Review?

|
I love reading books and to write reviews on the books that I finished is also my passion. But, I realized that my review writing skill is still young and immature. So, in order to improve my review writing and to make it interesting and outstanding, I need to do more practices on it. That's why, I read a lot of book reviews on net and book blogs to get as much input as possible. Here's some tips that really help me in my review writing. I won't hurt if I share with you right? So, check them out reviewers!!

GREAT REVIEW IN 6 STEPS
Credit to eHow.com
Review books that really move you one way or the other. It doesn't matter if the book made you angry, exhilarated, sad, or simply left you saying, "Wow." You need to have a passionate point of view that will come through in your writing, even if it stirred mixed feelings in you.
If you are familiar with the author's previous works, compare this book to his other(s.) This will give the reader a richer feel for the author's style and a good basis for comparison.
Grab the reader in the first line of your review with something engaging that also reveals the essence of the book.
Comment on things such as plot line, strengths and weaknesses of characters, flaws, sub plots and inventiveness of the author's writing.
Refrain from giving away any secrets or plot twists. You can talk about whether or not they worked for you, but don't reveal what they are.
Use a unique voice, whether that means injecting humor, sarcasm, or any other point of view that is in line with the book's genre. In other words, if you're reviewing a cook book, use creative and enticing language.

These articles will help a lot and i really hope that I can write a better, a fun-to-read-yet-informative review next time. For those who want to share your opinion or maybe tips on how to write a great reviews please feel free to share with me and all the readers OK. I'd really appreciate 'em. Thanks.^^

  • Going Home...It's Holidays Time!!

    |
Hey guys!! I'll be going home for 2 weeks long holidays. I'm so excited to go back home to sit together with my family and breaking fast together. Home is always a great place for me because I can eat all the delicious food that I want without paying a penny and I can sleep the whole day if I want (but of course I don't do this) and of course I got much time to read my books!!!

Well, Ramadhan is going to an end and we'll be celebrating Eid Ul-Fitr soon. I like this celebration because all the family members will be gathering and we seek for forviness from each other. It also will be a really colorful celebration because all people will be wearing new cloths such as Baju Kurung, Baju Kebaya, and Baju Melayu. These are Malay traditional clothes. Furthermore, I'll be waiting all the super duper extremely delicious foods. I'll stuff myself to death (I don't want to die though) this Eid!! Well the good thing about Malaysia is, though Eid-Ul-Fitri is a celebration for Muslims, all the Malaysian from different races Indian, Chinese and Borneo Continents also celebrate it in harmony and peace. We also celebrate Deepavali, Chinese New Year, Christmas, Gawai Day and other celebrations together. This is our country, this is our culture and this is Malaysia! I love Malaysia!!

Well guys, that's all for now. Since I'll be home for 2 weeks long, this blog will get abandoned for awhile and can't give  a visit to others blogs also. I'll come back again! Ciao....

The experience reading a rare book such as The Time Traveler's Wife really fantastic! And I find out that there's yet another rare book to be read, The Lovely Bones. Reading it's synopsis make me think, I have to get this book and treasure it, because it's truly a fascinating story. I never heard about the author, Alice Sebold. Maybe by reading The Lovely Bones, I'll get the chance to know her (I mean how's her writing style is). If The Lovely Bones can give the similar impact as The Time Traveler's Wife, I'll put them side by side on my shelf because The Time Traveler's Wife is by far my most favorite book! In fact, I'll be reading it for the third time this holidays!!

    The Lovely Bones

    Synopsis [Goodreads.com]
When we first meet 14-year-old Susie Salmon, she is already in Heaven. This was before milk carton photos and public service announcements, she tells us; back in 1973, when Susie mysteriously disappeared, people still believed these things didn't happen. In the sweet, untroubled voice of a precocious teenage girl, Susie relates the awful events of her death and her own adjustment to the strange new place she finds herself. It looks a lot like her school playground, with the good kind of swing sets. With love, longing, and a growing understanding, Susie watches her family as they cope with their grief, her father embarks on a search for the killer, her sister undertakes a feat of amazing daring, her little brother builds a fort in her honor and begin the difficult process of healing. In the hands of a brilliant novelist, this story of seemingly unbearable tragedy is transformed into a suspenseful and touching story about family, memory, love, Heaven, and living.

Well, lets hope that I'll get this book soon. Have a nice day guys! I'll be enjoying my holidays of course! Ciao..

    |
    Title/Year: About A Boy (2002)
    Director: Chris and Paul Weitz
Writers: Nick Hornby (Novel), Peter Hedges, Paul and Chris Weitz (Screenplay)
    Genre: Family, Comedy-Drama
Cast: Hugh Grant (Will Freeman), Nicholas Hoult (Marcus Brewer)

    Plot
Twelve year old Marcus Brewer lives with his chronically depressed single mother, Fiona Brewer. Both Fiona and Marcus beat to their own respective drummers. Marcus will do whatever he can to make his depressed mother happy, even if it causes himself grief. As such, he realizes that he is perceived as different than most kids, as even the self-professed weird kids don't want to hang out with him as he is the target of bullying. Part of the taunts against him are the fact that he sings and speaks to himself without even realizing that he is doing it. Meanwhile, thirty-eight year old Will Freeman is a slacker who has lived comfortably off the royalties of a song written by his deceased father, and as such has never had to work a day in his life. He is a solitary man who places himself as the first and only priority in life. He comes across the idea that dating single moms meets his selfish carnal needs. It is in this capacity that Will meets Marcus, as one of Will's single mother conquests, Suzie, is friends with the Brewers. Trying to escape his life but wanting Will to date Fiona, Marcus infiltrates Will's life, much to Will's chagrin. Will slowly begins to realize that Marcus is more than just a nuisance, but rather someone who needs some guidance navigating through the trials of adolescence and the trials of dealing with a suicidal mother, and perhaps he can be a small part of providing that direction. Conversely, Marcus may be able to show Will the path to becoming a real adult.

    About A Boy Movie Trailer

Well, I think the story is quiet interesting. It's quite difficult to find a story like this. I mean, in this genre, normally the main character will be a woman. So, having a family based theme of story from a man's perspective is a good thing for me. I got an E-book copy of About A Boy and will read it before I watch the movie. So, what about you? What movie that you want to watch? Share with me OK.

    August Recap

    |
    HELLO SEPTEMBER!!!!!

August is such a busy month. I have to attend classes, doing boring lab practicals, writing bunch of reports and do research for my seminar paper and my final year project. Huh..what a hectic life right? Like one of my friends said, instead of 7 days in a week, we wish that we can get 8 0r 9 days. And instead of 24 hours/day we're hoping for extras. But, this doesn't stop me to read. Well I manage to finish up several books in August and this is quite an achievement for me because, before this to finish one book in a month is quite difficult let alone to finish four books.
