How to Write a Great Book Review?

|
I love reading books and to write reviews on the books that I finished is also my passion. But, I realized that my review writing skill is still young and immature. So, in order to improve my review writing and to make it interesting and outstanding, I need to do more practices on it. That's why, I read a lot of book reviews on net and book blogs to get as much input as possible. Here's some tips that really help me in my review writing. I won't hurt if I share with you right? So, check them out reviewers!!

GREAT REVIEW IN 6 STEPS

Review books that really move you one way or the other. It doesn't matter if the book made you angry, exhilarated, sad, or simply left you saying, "Wow." You need to have a passionate point of view that will come through in your writing, even if it stirred mixed feelings in you.
If you are familiar with the author's previous works, compare this book to his other(s.) This will give the reader a richer feel for the author's style and a good basis for comparison.
Grab the reader in the first line of your review with something engaging that also reveals the essence of the book.
Comment on things such as plot line, strengths and weaknesses of characters, flaws, sub plots and inventiveness of the author's writing.
Refrain from giving away any secrets or plot twists. You can talk about whether or not they worked for you, but don't reveal what they are.
Use a unique voice, whether that means injecting humor, sarcasm, or any other point of view that is in line with the book's genre. In other words, if you're reviewing a cook book, use creative and enticing language.

These articles will help a lot and i really hope that I can write a better, a fun-to-read-yet-informative review next time. For those who want to share your opinion or maybe tips on how to write a great reviews please feel free to share with me and all the readers OK. I'd really appreciate 'em. Thanks.^^

Thanks for these little tips. I'm still trying to find a unique voice of my own when writing up reviews. Hopefully in the future I'll have it all figured out and my reviews will be even better. :)

What a great post. You have some really good tips. Something I like to see when I'm looking at the review is its genre which a lot of people don't add.

Lots of good advice there! I especially like using a narrative tone similar to that of the book's.

I'm always working on writing better reviews! I think it might be a never ending process - but it's a learning process too so I don't mind.
Great advice! I especially agree that you need to use your own voice when writing. Don't think you have to do something a certain way just because others do it that way.
Your blog - your reviews - your rules :)

It's so hard sometimes to avoid spoilers though. Like it was such a huge part that you just have to talk about it. But if you are, you definitely need to warn readers so that they can choose to avoid it.
